When should my child begin lessons?
One cannot magically deem a child to “be ready” for lessons at any given point. More important is the idea that the child needs to be tuned into music at an early age. An appreciation of good music will help get and maintain your child’s interest. As a general rule, due to the child’s physical ability and size, we recommend the following:Age 4 – 5 - Piano, violin, viola children can learn in either group or private settings.
Age 6 and 7 – Cello
8 and up – guitar and wind instruments
Voice - Serious voice instruction begins when the child reaches puberty; however, younger children can be taught the basics of voice and ear training and sight singing to help them get ready for intense voice training.

How important is it that my child practice?
As with anything, improving in music takes practice. One of the main problems with music lessons is the routine of practicing. Set the same time every day to practice so that it becomes part of a daily routine or habit. Generally, the earlier in the day the practicing can occur, the less reminding is required by parents.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How much should one practice?
Students should be well prepared for their lessons and should incorporate practice in their daily schedule. All students should practice a minimum of time five days out of each week. Beginners should practice 10-20 minutes; elementary-30 minutes; intermediate-60 minutes; advanced-60 minutes plus.
For a young child, twenty to thirty minutes can seem like eternity. Instead of setting a time frame,
use repetition. For example, "practice this piece four times every day and this scale five times a day".
The child then does not pay attention to the amount of time that she is practicing the instrument, but knows that if she is on
repetition three that she is almost finished.

Should I be there to help my child?
Parent involvement is crucial for students’ progress. The Parents can ask the teacher for advice on how to help your child practice. By simply monitoring that they are doing exercises a certain number of times per day the student will progress. Parents are expected to be aware of what has been assigned each week and encourage practice time. Many parents occasionally sit in on their child’s music lesson to get an idea of the proper way a song should sound or how the student should be positioning their hands---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
